Even in case of headache, migraine, or other types of headache, nature can help us with some effective remedies to be evaluated according to individual situations. There are so-called ” grandmother’s remedies ” that use foods commonly found at home, such as potatoes, lemon, cabbage leaves, or herbal, homeopathic, or essential oils that can alleviate the discomfort caused by headaches.
So let’s find out the main natural remedies for headache:
Avoid taking medicines, and to relieve pain, you could make compresses with cabbage leaves or onion, or horseradish to apply to the nape of the neck for at least half an hour.
Lemon or Potatoes
Also, to relieve the pain, cut and apply slices of lemon or potato on the temples, holding them still with a cotton handkerchief tied around the head.
Essential oils of Lavender or Mint
If, on the other hand, you have lavender or mint essential oils, gently rub your temples and forehead.
Calming herbal teas

- Kalmia latifolia helps to combat headaches that start from the neck and extend from the nape to the center of the head and which appear mainly in the morning and ends in the evening, intensifying in the middle of the day, worsening with the light.
- Belladonna For a strong frontal throbbing headache accompanied by hypersensitivity to the scalp (so much so that it is difficult to comb). The pains are stinging, worsening in the open air, and with noise.
- Bryonia to combat pain that starts in the left eye or forehead and extends to the whole head, also associated with constipation. The pains increase if you do any kind of movement.
- Calcarea Phosphorica is useful for students who, in addition to head pain, also suffer from severe stomach pain.
- Black cohosh, in case of neck stiffness and pain that occurs mainly with the menstrual cycle or with hormonal changes during menopause.
- Ignatia amara, for problems caused by spasms in the head or back and feels like a fixation, especially a headache caused by trauma or emotional pain
- Natrum muriaticum is a great remedy for migraines caused by sun exposure or headaches that come on from stress or pain.
- Nux vomica indicated for headaches caused by stress, too much work, indigestion, or intoxication. The pain is often accompanied by nausea and stomach pain. This remedy is also excellent in cases of constipation.
- Pulsatilla (Pulsatilla pratensis) also can relieve pain caused by the menstrual cycle.
- Spigelia, useful for cluster headaches that mainly affect the face and eyes
Warm compresses with salt
If the headache is due to ongoing sinusitis, hot salt packs can be done, which has a positive effect on the thinning of the mucus. This pack is put directly on the nasal septa and painful areas to get the benefits. The heat is, in fact, able to dissolve the mucus and therefore allow it to escape more easily.

Other useful tips against headache
To make the pain less severe, try to relax and breathe deeply; in fact, sometimes, the headache can be caused or worsened by an inadequate supply of oxygen. When the pain is so strong that you don’t want to think, lie down in a dark room and make compresses with cool (but possibly warm) water on the area where you feel the most pain. Sometimes, as mentioned above, the headache is caused by bad posture or by the wrong shoes; try to take a correct position when sitting and possibly opt for ergonomic chairs.
Reflexology, massage, aromatherapy, and acupuncture could be solutions to severe chronic headaches, but the best thing before undergoing any treatment in these cases is to consult a specialist in the matter. Finally, don’t forget to rest the right amount, not too much but not too little.
