Is Peppermint Oil Good for Anxiety?

Peppermint oil is appreciated for benefits against anxiety relief, colds and heavy legs. This plant is tonic, stimulating, detoxifying, and its essential oil is effective against pain.

Analgesic, the essential oil of peppermint helps calm pain thanks to the cooling effect of the menthone it contains.

It distils cold into the tissues, which is useful for relieving the pain of inflammatory origin: headaches, sinusitis, joint and muscle pain (sprain, stiffness). It is even slightly anesthetic. It is diluted with vegetable oil because its action is very powerful.

We pour 2 to 3 drops directly on the skin where we feel the pain (the temples for the migraine or anxiety), and we rub to make it penetrate.

The benefits of peppermint

The essential oil of peppermint is produced from the steam distillation of water from the leaves of the plant. It has an extremely refreshing effect.

Its richness in menthol makes it a very popular oil in aromatherapy and herbal medicine. It is also an ingredient widely used in several cosmetic, pharmaceutical (soaps, lotions, syrups, cough drops, local anesthetics, etc.) and food (in chewing gum, for example).

Peppermint has other virtues

The benefits of peppermint are multiple:

  • It has tranquilizing properties which are useful in reducing stress and anxiety. It is a good remedy in case of mental fatigue or difficult concentration.
  • Antiviral, it would have a protective effect against certain viruses such as herpes in particular.
  • Recognized for its antispasmodic and antibacterial properties, it is beneficial against digestive disorders, intestinal inflammation, nausea, vomiting and fights against bad bacteria.
  • Its composition in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes makes it ideal against heavy legs because it promotes better blood circulation and limits venous dilation.
  • Thanks to its menthol content, it is effective in treating colds and clearing the airways.

How to use it?

The dosage of the essential oil varies according to the case treated and the mode of use, it is, therefore, important to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

  • In case of stress and anxiety, we soak a handkerchief and then breathe it.
  • When applied to the skin, avoid contact with the eyes and never apply it to a lesion (wound or scratch).

Regarding its conservation, the essential oil of peppermint must be protected from light and in a tightly closed bottle.

Contraindications and precaution for use

Peppermint essential oil is very potent, so you have to be careful when using it for the first time. It is not used for large surfaces because its cooling effect would then be too powerful. It is not suitable for bathing.

Its use is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under 6 years old and people with hypertension. People with epilepsy, hepatic and cardiovascular disorders should also avoid it unless a doctor advises otherwise.
