Different types of hormones are active in our bodies and perform different functions. There are, for example:
- Thyroid hormones: thyroxine and triiodothyronine, produced by the thyroid gland, useful for regulating metabolic processes.
- Sleep hormones: first of all, melatonin, produced by the pineal gland, which affects not only the quality of night’s rest but also general health (bad sleep can, in fact, make the human body weak and more prone to disease).
- Adrenal hormones: the cortisol produced by the adrenal glands helps the metabolic processes and regulates the levels of stress.
- Reproductive hormones: progesterone and estrogen regulate menstrual cycles, vaginal pH, and female fertility. Testosterone regulates male fertility, libido, bone mass, and red blood cell production.
If the hormonal system is out of balance at different levels, we can see numerous symptoms appear, including weight gain, pain, fatigue, insomnia, low libido, menstrual irregularities, infertility, anxiety, depression, and more.
The hormonal imbalances can be caused by various factors: disorderly diet, high stress levels, genetics, exposure to environmental toxins, obesity, bowel disorders, poor sleep quality, sedentary lifestyle, and various health problems.

Herbs most commonly used to treat hormonal imbalances include holy basil, myrtle, sage, sandalwood, ashwagandha, lemon balm, chaste tree, lavender, maca, and damask rose. We know specifically in which cases they can help.
This plant is able to reduce the levels of cortisol, and the stress hormone can, therefore, help in case of anxiety. It is also useful for treating memory problems, nervous exhaustion, sexual and sleep disorders. In fact, even the more traditional essential oil of basil promotes a better response to stress.
Ashwagandha is particularly effective in regulating hormonal balances. It is beneficial for the thyroid as it promotes the elimination of free radicals that lead to cell damage. In addition, it can also be used to improve the condition of an overactive thyroid and help overcome adrenal fatigue.
It appears that this plant has sedative and relaxing properties on the nervous system and muscles. The essential oil of myrtle can therefore help relaxation, relax in case of anxiety and improve the quality of sleep, and it also has a positive effect on the release of hormones, both thyroid, and typically female ones.

Sage is considered an ally herb for women. In fact, it has been shown to increase estrogen levels, which, if too low (for example, during menopause) can cause symptoms such as nervousness, hot flashes, etc. The active ingredients contained in this plant have the ability to reduce cortisol levels by improving thyroid functions.
Sandalwood is able to lower stress and calm anxiety. It is a plant with a relaxing power that can also help improve the quality of sleep. An essential oil can help regulate testosterone levels and is considered a natural aphrodisiac.
Lemon balm essential oil can be useful in case of hyperthyroidism and, in general, to rebalance the neuroendocrine system. This plant is, in fact, able to inhibit the activity of the thyroid gland by acting on thyrotropin, a pituitary hormone that stimulates an excessive production of hormones that gives rise to hyperthyroidism.
This plant is particularly active against female hormones, which helps to rebalance. This is why a chaste tree is often recommended for the treatment of various ailments typical of women such as premenstrual syndrome, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, but also problems related to menopause.
We have talked about maca several times; this Andean tuber has energy qualities but also acts positively on the endocrine system of both men and women. It is especially recommended in case of libido, menstrual or fertility disorders.
Lavender oil improves emotional balance because it significantly treats depression, anxiety, stress, and mood swings. Additionally, it is used to improve sleep quality, which in turn helps regulate hormones.
Damask rose essential oil is one of the most expensive and valuable. It is indicated in cases of female hormonal imbalances, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. It can also be experienced in cases of anxiety and irritability.
