How to Treat Sinus Infection

Sinusitis can arise several times throughout life due to an infection by the flu virus or the presence of an allergy, causing the appearance of quite uncomfortable symptoms such as headache and pain in the face, nasal congestion, and fever above 38 ° C.

So to cure sinusitis faster, the cause of inflammation must be eliminated, in addition to following some simple tips to relieve symptoms, facilitate healing and recovery from each crisis.

1. Humidify the air

Using a humidifier or simply placing a bucket of warm water inside the rooms of the house is a great way to humidify the air, making it less dry. This makes the airways more hydrated and less irritated, relieving discomfort, and facilitating healing.

This tip is especially useful during the night to facilitate sleep and avoid waking up with a stuffy nose, for example.

2. Use physiological saline to clean the nose

Placing a few drops of the saline solution inside each nostril helps to eliminate dirt and accumulation of secretions since it thins mucus and phlegm, making it easier to remove. Therefore, the ideal is not to inhale the serum but to blow your nose immediately afterward.

3. Use a homemade saline solution

Adding one tablespoon of salt to a glass of filtered or mineral water and applying this mixture inside the nose is also a homemade way to end the discomfort of sinusitis.

This mixture can be placed in a syringe, and the content can be forcefully discharged into the nose, keeping the mouth open. This way, it is possible to remove a good amount of mucus and impurities, leaving the nose uncovered easily.

4. Inspire herbal vapors

Placing some chamomile or eucalyptus leaves and flowers in a bucket of hot water is also a great way to relieve nasal congestion caused by sinusitis. A still-warm damp cloth can then be placed on the face because this will also help improve breathing faster.

5. Drink more water

A natural way to moisten the sinuses, being a great help in case of dry sinusitis, is to consume more fluids, especially water or sugar-free teas. This way, all the tissues of the body are more hydrated, even the nasal mucosa.

6. Eat warm meals

Soups and broths are good lunch and dinner options, while sinus symptoms are present. These plates help to unclog the nose, reducing pain and irritation of the nasal mucosa.

7. Get enough rest

In a sinus attack, it is advisable to rest if possible, or at least be able to rest properly. Sleeping late and waking up always tired can indicate that you are not getting enough rest.

During treatment, it is recommended to avoid efforts and do physical activity with very intense training. 20-minute excursions may be welcome if conducted in an airy, wooded setting, but if your sinusitis is caused by allergies, it may not be a good option, and staying home may be a better choice.

What can cause chronic sinusitis

Although, in most cases, sinusitis heals after treatment and takes a long time to reappear, there are people who suffer from chronic sinusitis, which appears several times throughout the year and whose symptoms last longer.

Generally, this type of sinusitis is caused by causes that are not easy to eliminate and that are constantly irritating the paranasal sinuses, causing the appearance of this problem. These causes are:

  • Respiratory allergies, such as allergies to animal hair or dust;
  • Cigarette smoke;
  • Autoimmune diseases that weaken the immune system.

In addition to this, some people may still have polyps in the nose or other anatomical problems that facilitate the development of sinusitis. In these cases, the doctor may recommend surgery to solve the problem, which ends up being the solution to the problem. However, this surgery does not prevent sinusitis from recurring due to other causes such as allergies or infection by the flu virus.

How to treat chronic sinusitis

In the vast majority of chronic sinusitis cases, in addition to medications, treatment must also involve lifestyle changes to try to avoid the causes that may be causing the inflammation of the sinuses.

Some of these alterations include quitting smoking, avoiding being in polluted places, and keeping the house always clean and dust-free.
