Essential Oils

Eco-friendly DIY anti-Mosquito Spray

You wouldn’t think so, but summer should arrive soon and, with it, mosquitoes will also arrive on time. In order not to get stung, here is an ecological spray lotion to prepare in a few minutes.

Many online recipes include the use of neem oil, a powerful repellent, with the addition of essential oils; I personally find that oil during the hottest months is not well tolerated. It can also be uncomfortable to apply it frequently, so I prefer to make a more practical and fresh spray lotion. Do not use it on children, as it contains too many essential oils.

Here are the ingredients

  • 70 g of distilled water
  • 20 g of alcohol
  • 10 g of vegetable glycerin (available in pharmacies)
  • 60 drops of essential oils of your choice among those indicated below

Weigh the water and add the glycerin. Separately, weigh the Buongusto alcohol (the one used to prepare liqueurs) and add twenty drops of lemongrass essential oil. For the remaining forty drops, choose two of these essential oils: geranium, lavender, mint, lemon, lemon balm, tea tree, eucalyptus.

Combine the mixture of alcohol and essential oils with that of water and glycerin, mix and pour everything into a bottle equipped with a spray pump.

Why these ingredients

Alcohol serves to solubilize essential oils and preserve the lotion; glycerin is moisturizing and buffers the dehydrating effect of alcohol; the essential oils indicated are used to keep mosquitoes away.

How to use

Spray and massage the spray on the exposed parts of the body.

If, despite the spray, you still get stung, apply a drop of lavender essential oil directly to the sting, and in a few minutes, the redness and itching will disappear.

Instead, to keep mosquitoes away in the house, just insert a few drops of lemongrass essential oil into the diffuser; for flies and midges, use eucalyptus essential oil instead.

I wish you a summer without bites, hoping that the summer will arrive sooner or later!
