The two most important points are: not to use too much essential oil and to use quality essential oils. These oils are generally very concentrated. We must, therefore, be very careful. A small amount of essential oil can thus release a large amount of fragrance as well as a large dose of active ingredients, which could be harmful to people and animals.

How many Drops of Essential Oil to Put in Its Diffuser?

Keep in mind that less is always more when it comes to aromatherapy—extracted from plants, all essential oils tend to be highly concentrated, with a relatively strong aroma. We strongly recommend that beginners start with a small amount and work their way up.

Here’s How many Drops of Essential Oil to Put in Your Diffuser

Diffuser size                                             Number of drops

  • 100mL                                                        3-5
  • 200mL                                                        6-9
  • 300mL                                                        10-12
  • 400mL                                                        12-15
  • 500mL                                                        15-18

The Case of the Ultrasonic Diffuser

The formula is easy to use. We suggest that you put four drops of essential oil for 100 milliliters of water. For example, if your diffuser has a capacity of 300 ml, you will need to add 12 drops of essential oil.

Be careful not to put too many drops of essential oil.

The usual amount of water in a small diffuser is 100 ml. In this case, it is generally recommended to add 3 to 5 drops of essential oil per 100 ml of water. The rule above gives us exactly four drops. Of course, the amount you choose to add will vary depending on your personal preferences, as well as the size of the room – larger rooms will benefit from a bit more oil.

Diffusers come in different sizes, but these are usually in 100ml increments, so calculating how many drops of essential oil to add is relatively easy. Smaller 100ml diffusers take an average of 3-5 drops, while larger 500ml diffusers take 15-20 drops.

The Number of Drops for the Essential Oil Nebulizer

Unlike the ultrasonic diffuser, the nebulizer uses essences exclusively. Which, volatile, will be propelled into the air by fine pure droplets.

The process is very efficient, so it should not be overused. For a small room of 10-20 square meters, we recommend 3 to 5 drops. Up to 12-15 drops for a large room of 50 square meters and more.

Obviously, you can make a mixture of different essential oils. But as much as possible, try to stick to these recommendations for the total number of drops in your recipe.

How to Convert the Number of Drops to Ml?

There are about 200 drops in a 10ml bottle of essential oil. This means that you can get about 50 uses from a 10ml bottle of essential oil if you use a 100ml diffuser.

You can usually buy essential oils in small 5-15ml bottles. However, some types are available in larger bottles up to 100ml.

Signs you’ve Used too Much Essential Oil

If you experience any of these symptoms, it means that you may have put on too much essential oil. Being heavy-handed with the amount of essential oil you put in your diffuser isn’t usually very good. Watch out for side effects.

If you have any of the following effects, we advise you to dilute the essential oils by two in more water: dizziness, migraines, nausea, or vomiting.

If this is your first time using essential oils or pairing them with an essential oil diffuser, then if in doubt, cut down. Start with fewer drops first, then adjust the amount afterward to suit your room size and personal taste.

The Other Main Dosages for Essential Oils

The indications below are of a general nature and concern the essential oils for which these uses are possible. Some essential oils are not suitable for use on the skin.

If in doubt, read the instructions for using the product or consult an expert to use it.

In the Bath

Pour ten drops of essential oils in the tub before running the lukewarm or hot bathwater. Essential oils are usually not soluble in water, but at this rate, for a good amount of hot water, dilution can be achieved. The bath can be total or partial, such as hand baths, shower feet, or sitz baths.

Quantity: between 5 to 10 drops, depending on your tolerance, start by testing a small amount, to increase if desired later, but do not exceed ten drops and do not use it for small children.

For the Shower

Pour the essential oils on a glove and add your shower gel to the glove.

Quantity: 3 drops per shower.

In Inhalation

Pour the drops of the essential oils chosen in a container of boiling water and breathe in the steam by bringing the head of the steam, possibly with a towel on the head (very effective for all respiratory problems).

Make the operation last about 10 minutes, taking breaks.

Quantity: between 2 to 4 drops. Depending on your tolerance.

In Massage

Use essential oils diluted in a base vegetable oil and practice a massage on the part of the body (local massage) or the whole body.

Dilution: between 1 and 2% of essential oils for the face. Between 2 and 5% for the body, 1% for children 8 to 12 years old.

In Your Shampoo

Dilute about 10 to 20 drops of essential oils in 100 ml of a neutral shampoo.
